In relevance to the 45th Foundation Day Celebration, Camiguin Provincial Governor Jurdin Jesus ‘JJ’ M. Romualdo delivered his State of the Provincial Address at the Camiguin Tourism Complex, Mambajao on Jan. 7, 2013.

Before the governor started delivering his speech, he first requested everyone to offer a short silent prayer for the victims of Typhoon Pablo.

Romualdo then extended gratitude to all the agencies, departments and government officials, who handed their active support, he also did not forget to appreciate the cooperation of the Camiguingnons in achieving another milestone of progress.

“I am proud to inform our fellow Camiguingnons that our island province received the ‘ Gawad Pamana ng Lahi 2012’ award for the areas of social services and local governance,” he uttered.

Apart from the recognitions, he also revealed the achievements of his administration by year 2012.

In the field of economic developments, investors increased, job creations followed with 7,710 were employed and a boom in the tourism industry with a recorded increase of 9.8%.

He also affirmed that tourists are attracted to the island because of its significant developments that perhaps retained its magnificent environment. “It is really more fun in Camiguin Island,” he added.

The Provincial Agriculture Office (PAO) sustained the implementation of its agricultural developments/ projects; Plant Now, Pay Later, Agro-forest project, Bantay-dagat, Coastal Management, Coconut rehabilitation and Lanzones production.

Romualdo also revealed that the provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) has also maintained its veterinary offices and thus making campaign for a “Rabies-free Camiguin”.

The Department of Science and Technology has also been upgrading the Lanzones wine and vinegar and the cure against dengue caused by mosquito bites. Also, the governor encourages the people to clean their houses and so with their surroundings.

More so, Romualdo had promised that after two years the Camiguin Tourism Center will be fully furnished with rubberized oval, volleyball court, basketball court and Swimming/Diving Pool and by that year Camiguin can host the Regional Meet.

In social development, Camiguin was declared as “Disease Free Zone of Malaria for 2012”, was recorded with decrease trend of malnutrition rate, also the province had assisted essential health care like the distribution of PhilHealth cards, toilet bowls and had assisted the beneficiaries of the 4P’s ( Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program).

Meanwhile, the reconstruction of Camiguin District Hospital to be used as a mental hospital is still ongoing and the World Health Organization is expected to visit Camiguin by July 2013, Romualdo confirmed.

In education, the governor congratulated the Department of Education for the 47 awards it received for 2012. He propounded that the province will continue the scholarship program it started while they will implement training in TESDA.

Governor Romualdo further noted that there was a decrease of 50% on crimes because of their strong political will. While the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (PDRRMC) is always ready for any calamity that will hit Camiguin.

Moreover, forest management services, coastal resource management program, preservation of corals are sustained. A 5-hectare land-fill was constructed at Benhaan and is good for 20 years of service.

The governor is also planning to build Boys Town and Girls Town in the island for Camiguin youths to be well-disciplined and be monitored always.

Finally, Romualdo concluded his address by humbly asking the full cooperation of Camiguingnons for the continuation of the developments that they have started, “Mabuhay ang Camiguin, magkasama tayo sa hirap at ginhawa, let’s all work hand in hand, let’s work as a team and Happy 45th Charter Day Celebration.”
